DST: Is This the Last Time We Will Fall Back in Louisiana?

We've all been hearing for years that eventually, Daylight Saving will come to an end and we won't be "springing forward" or "falling back" any longer. But, will it actually happen? And if so, when?

What Was Daylight Savings Invented For?

Daylight Saving Time (DST) was originally invented to make better use of natural daylight during the longer days of spring, summer, and early autumn.

The primary goals are energy conservation, extended daylight hours to promote more outdoor activity, economic benefits, and even safety and improved quality of life.

Some argue that the energy-saving benefits of DST are limited, while others believe it still serves a valuable purpose in terms of lifestyle and economic factors.

When Did Daylight Savings Start?

Daylight Saving Time was first introduced in the U.S. during World War I, with the Standard Time Act of 1918.

People didn't like it, so DST was repealed in 1919.

However, Daylight Saving Time was brought back during WW II, but once again discontinued after the war.

In the early 1960s, DST was adopted once again and has stuck ever sense.

Permanent daylight saving time existed during the wartime years of 1918 to 1919 and 1942 to 1945 to conserve energy."

When Will Louisiana Stop Changing Time?

According to WWLTV.com, in the past 5 years 19 states have passed legislation supporting year-round Daylight Saving Time.

In Louisiana, currently we're in a state of limbo politically with DST.

"House Bill 132, making daylight saving time permanent in Louisiana, was signed into law in 2020.

Like other permanent DST laws across the nation, it cannot go into effect while Congress keeps the Uniform Time Act of 1966 in place."

When Congress finally, and hopefully, repeals the Uniform Time Act of 1966, Louisiana will be ready to stop changing time.

So, at least for this year, Louisiana will indeed "fall back" at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 5, 2023.
