It happened last night just after 11pm across much of the United States and portions of Europe and Australia. It was the moment that many had secretly feared. Facebook and Instagram both went down. This of course caused Twitter to experience emotional overload.

According to CNN who contacted a Facebook spokesperson Charlene Chian during the outage the company line went something like this.

"We're aware that many people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram. We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."

Whatever the cause was the techies at Facebook and Instagram got their service back up and working by shortly after midnight.

Naturally the Twittersphere erupted with great puns and tongue in cheek memes about the whole thing. One entrepreneur even offered T-shirts for sale that touted "I Survived #facebookdown".

It's a good thing this happened late at night and into the wee small hours of the morning where we live. I would hate to think that important status updates would have to be with an actual phone call or face to face conversation. If this teaches us one thing it is this. We can survive a few hours without our social media. It is possible for life to continue the way it once continued for generations without electronic interference.  Still it's a good thing most of you were sleeping.
