Well I guess what happened in that video happens a lot more than I think it does. I am praying that it won't be happening to me. I am teaching my daughter Anna how to drive. I think that's a pretty scary proposition. I know it's a right of passage and once upon a time my parents climb beside me on the family Conestoga Wagon as we headed west on the Oregon Trail. Yeah, I'm really that old.

How did you teach your youngster to drive? Did you do the parking lot thing? Did you let her drive on some vacant land you have? What did you do?

She has taken and passed Driver's Education with flying colors. Her instructor said she was a natural behind the wheel. I really don't doubt that fact, until I am in the car with her and she is sitting in my seat.

While I know my child is very responsible in many aspects of her life. I still see her as the kid that once hid all of her dirty laundry under a table to avoid doing laundry. Heavy sigh, what is a parent supposed to do?

I know that once she gets a license to drive she will be a big help to me and her mom. She will be able to run all those errands I have to run now. She will be able to attend school meetings and classes without me having to stay up until 7pm. She will be able to get a job and earn her own money. The advantages are many.

The disadvantage is I know how dangerous it is on the roadway. I have to report stories of awful tragedies that happen to young drivers everyday.  I know how cruel and stupid people can get behind the wheel and I don't want my kid or your kid in their way. I guess the best we can both do is teach our kids how to drive defensively and always be on the look out for idiots running loose.

Regardless,in the very near future there will be yet another young driver on Acadiana's roadways. I do hope I have taught her well for her own safety and for your safety too.
