David Walker, who served the University of Louisiana in several different capacities, including Director of Athletics, passed away last night.

Walker graduated from Berwick High and served in the military before enrolling at UL, from which he graduated in 1976.  He served for 37 years at the school, mostly as Director of Auxiliary Services.

He was asked to serve as interim director of athletics in 2005 following the resignation of Nelson Schexnayder in 2005.  Shortly after ascending to the position, Hurricane Katrina and Rita hit Louisiana.  Walker opened the doors to the University and to Cajun Field to aid the football programs at Tulane and McNeese State.

He accepted the permanent position in 2007 and made two important hires, including former football coach Mark Hudspeth and current basketball coach Bob Marlin.  He announced his retirement in October of 2010 and stepped down at the end of that year.

He is survived by wife Patricia and daughter Ginny.

The university issued the following statement:

Louisiana Athletics mourns the death of David Walker, director of athletics from 2007 to 2010 who passed away Tuesday evening.
A 1976 graduate of the University, Walker served his alma mater in many roles in the campus’ administration for more than 30 years. Prior to taking over as permanent athletics director in 2007, Walker served in the position on an interim basis beginning in 2005. Shortly after, he helped the University and Lafayette communities navigate the aftermaths of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The campus community extends its condolences to the Walker family, as well as David Walker’s many friends and colleagues.
Statement from University President, Dr. E. Joseph Savoie “Prior to and during his tenure as director of athletics, David served in many important roles at the University. He was a trusted adviser and effectively managed several delicate and complicated issues. In each, he focused on the University’s best interests. David was unassuming, but he had a great strategic mind, and he was very effective in his long and loyal service to the University. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Pat, and the entire Walker family.”
Statement from Director of Athletics Bryan Maggard “On behalf of our entire department, I want to express sincere gratitude for the leadership Mr. Walker provided to Ragin’ Cajuns Athletics during his tenure as Director of Athletics. He was extremely respected by all whom he worked with and will be greatly missed.”
