It is pretty common to see KitchenAid products in kitchens across America.

I was just googling one product that I have had my eyes on for some time now, a KitchenAid Stand Mixer. It was during my Google search that I learned that there might be an issue when it comes to these mixers.

According to Consumer Safety Advocate Tamara Rubin, it seems that some of the KitchenAid Mixers attachments may contain lead in them.

Consumer Safety Advocate Tamara Rubin who is also known on social media as Lead Safe Mama recently went into great detail about the KitchenAid issue on her Facebook page.

The good news is that if you have a KitchenAid Stand Mixer that has the products that have been identified as potentially having lead in them then you can get a replacement part easily.

All you have to do is contact KitchenAid and they will provide you with a replacement at no cost to you.

It is important to note that there is no recall on the products yet and that there is no class action lawsuit involved. However, both may happen in the future.

So the most common attachments that may contain lead are the whisk, dough hook, and paddle. However, all of the attachments that are sold by KitchenAid may also contain lead. And to make matters even more confusing Rubin stated that all KitchenAid Stand Mixer cast aluminum attachments from all years may contain lead.

Rubin was dedicated to the project and spent a lot of time testing hundreds of KitchenAid attachments and found that nearly all of them were contaminated with lead, at least according to her study. It is important to state that the actual KitchenAid Stand Mixers do not have lead in them, just the attachments are involved in these allegations.

If you have one of the attachments that are talked about above it is most likely that you will not get lead poisoning from using them but it still would not be safe to use.

It is important to note that KitchenAid has denied the allegations and has been sending a prepared statement to commenters on social media which states,

Throughout our 111-year history, Whirlpool Corporation has been committed to providing safe products for our consumers. The company's aluminum alloy stand mixer accessories, including beaters, dough hooks, and whisks are tested through by a third-party, independent laboratory to ensure they comply with all applicable regulations in the locations where they are sold regarding lead content. They are safe for any family's cooking needs. In addition, all current models of aluminum stand mixer accessories have a food-safe coating over the aluminum that is tested both for lead content and lead migration to ensure that it is safe for all consumers. KitchenAid users have raised concerns about the cast aluminum attachments that come with the mixers — in particular that these attachments are contaminated with poisonous lead.

If you would like to request a free replacement part you can do that by calling customer service at 1-800-541-6390. However, be prepared to wait for hours on the phone. There have been reports of people waiting several hours due to extremely high volume.
