A few weeks ago I began a new series to help Lafayette drivers finally know the correct way to pronounce some of the street names here that seem to have more than one pronunciation.

Our first target was the south Lafayette favorite, Verot School Road. While the unscientific poll I took yielded mix results, it seems the correct way is "Vay-row".

Round number two gets us to the divisive Robley Drive. Of course, this is the road that intersects with Ambassador Caffery near Super 1 Foods and Lowes and from all that I've ever heard has two very different pronunciations.

Folks either say it with a short "o" or long "o". Personally, I say it with the short "o" but it seems like a lot of people I know who have lived in the Hub City for their whole lives say it the other way.

I have the correct answer and it's contained in the following video. In it, you will see my good friend and colleague, the ingenious Ray Sutley.

"Ray-Ray" gives the definitive answer and he has a reliable source to back him up.

Seriously, how are you going to doubt the late, great Floyd Cormier?!?

That's right, Ray sources the former long-time television and radio personality when saying that it's Robley with a long "o" because it is named after someone and that's how he pronounced his name.

I will do some more research and try to find out exactly who Mr. Robley was and why he got a road named after him. In the meantime, you can rest easier tonight.

Thank you Ray and thank you Floyd. (Sidenote: Floyd stills roams the halls here at the Bruce Mikells Multi-Media Center...but he's a nice ghost with only a prank or two up his sleeves.)
