The deluge that beset upon us Saturday afternoon could not have had worse timing. We were poised to break a stadium record at Cajun Field with the Ragin Cajuns opening their 2014 football campaign against a very well supported Southern University Jaguars squad.  It is speculated that the heavy downpours that covered the area most of the day was the reason that thousands of fans that would have been in the stands stayed away.

The good news is those heavy downpours and high rainfall totals did very little damage across the area. The bad news is more rain is possible on your Labor Day Monday holiday. Rain chances won't be nearly as high as they were over the weekend but there is still a better than normal chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm.

An abundance of moisture is available in the atmosphere and the daytime heating should serve to provide a lifting mechanism to create upheaval in the sky above us. We don't think there will be any severe weather but afternoon thunderstorms do produce gusty winds and and heavy downpours sometimes.

Rain chances will be about 40% for this afternoon with showers and thunderstorms beginning to pop up around lunchtime.  For the return to work and school on Tuesday you can expect more of the same with afternoon showers and thunderstorms being possible each day.

There is a bright spot as we look ahead to next weekend. The forecast for Saturday when the Cajuns host Louisiana Tech is much improved from last week. There will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms but not nearly the chances that were anticipated by the long range forecast from last week.
