ESPN 1420 reported a few weeks ago that Tony Robichaux and the Ragin' Cajuns agreed to a five year extension, but now it's official.

Under Robichaux's guidance, Ragin' Cajun Baseball racked up 100 wins in the past two seasons and a total record of 774-490-1 in his entire time with the university. The career 1,000 game winner will be coaching ball in Lafayette for the next five years, at least. That's certainly news to rejoice about in Cajun country.

Coach Robe will be paid $125,580 per year, and UL gave him a $60,000 signing bonus on top of some other incentive based contract rewards. Athletic Director Scott Farmer was happy to have his guy back.

“We strongly believe that Tony Robichaux is one of the top baseball coaches in the country,” Farmer said. “Both on the baseball field and in life, Tony has been a tremendous teacher and role model to all of the young men who have worn the Ragin’ Cajuns uniform. We are excited that he has committed to leading our program for the next five years.”

Speaking of the of-the-field excellence, Robichaux will also receive a $2,000 bonus for a team GPA of 3.00 or an APR of 930 or better. With how hard his men hit the books, he could be banking that bonus every season.

In classic Robe fashion, he found a way to remain humble about everything.

“It's never been my program, I am just managing it for them, and I am grateful to be able to do that for another five years," Robichaux said.

On top of thanking the university, Robichaux went directly into his three goals for his time left at UL. He laid them right out on the table.

"The first is to get back to Omaha," Robe said. "The second is to win a national championship, and third would be to see the renovation of 'The Tigue' completed. Those are my three goals that I wanted to attain that are still on the table."

Cajun Nation is getting used to travel plans for the postseason, or even better setting up host plans for a regional. Clearly, the trip to Omaha is what every coach wants, but with the results over the last two years, the mecca of baseball is an attainable goal. With the special talent he's been able to recruit, especially on the mound, the next five years could be a ton of fun.

A little time to smile for Coach Robichaux and his family, then it's back to work. That's why Lafayette loves Coach Robe.

“This is the place that my wife and I want to be," Robichaux said. "We have some of the greatest fans, and myself and the coaching staff will be working hard to accomplish those three goals.”
