The old ABC Saturday sports series Wide World of Sports had a most iconic opening. The announcer, Jim McKay, spoke over dramatic music about the "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat". This would be more along the agony side than the thrill side of sports.

In the video you will see an incredible French athlete. He is flying down the slopes in a major ski competition when something awful happens. If you are a man it is something awful because you can see it, hear it and I bet feel it when he hits the gate.

The best part of the video is the empathy of the announcers. They really do bring a feeling of sportsmanship to the broadcast. I especially like the comment about the Frenchman needing a hug.
