Cancer. It's like a curse word. We hear it and it just seems so wrong to say. However, unlike curse words, cancer is real. And it is deadly. It can also be fought and overcome.

A couple of months back, I was told that someone very close to me was going to be going in the hospital for scans of her breasts. I didn't know what to expect. What is that even supposed to mean? How can she even potentially have breast cancer? She has been always been healthy and she just can't have it.

So many emotions ran through my mind. Thankfully, her scans came back to she that the lumps were benign. But how are you supposed to prepare yourself for the worst?

The question, 'Will I be affected by this?' has always stuck with me. I have seen first hand what cancer in general can do to someone. It's job is to take your life both mentally and physically. How is someone supposed to be okay with that? Whether you have personally been affected or known someone who has, the key is strength. You may no have it physically, but your mental strength can work miracles. That is what I remind myself of every day.

Ladies, when you go to the lady doctor and she/he starts feeling on you, it may be weird, but it is important. So are your annual mammograms. Stay on top of your health.

I know that many of you out there have been affected by this disease and it because of organizations like Susan G. Komen that loved ones are still with us and you are still with them.

The 2015 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is set for Saturday, March 21st in downtown Lafayette. Join in the fight and help to beat breast cancer. When you participate, know that you aren't just fighting against breast cancer. In theory, you are fighting against cancer in general. You show your support and that speaks volumes.

Early registration is now open until February 24th at KomenAcadiana.org. Sign up today and then invite your friends to do the same. You will help to save a life.
