Kelly Clarkson might have gotten her start in pop music, but she’s inching closer and closer to taking over country, too. Last weekend, Clarkson showed that she’s worth her weight in gold as a crossover artist when she put on a rendition of Dixie Chicks‘ ‘Wide Open Spaces’ during a performance in Murphy, CA.
It is no surprise that American Idol has helped quite a few talented, country singers find their way to stardom. The America Idol fans have seemed to love the previous country singers while they were on the competitive show. I can think of several, very famous country singers who started on American Idol.
When ‘American Idol’ copycat programs began enjoying success worldwide, someone thought it’d be a great idea to put the 11 individual country winners against each other for a one-day event called ‘World Idol.’ Kelly Clarkson — season one ‘Idol’ winner — was the U.S. representative, and she did very well, finishing second to Norway’s Kurt Nilsen. Yes, that mop-topped boy on the right (who vaguely resembles Clay Aiken) is Nilsen.

Last night, Blake Shelton surprised his Toledo, Ohio audience by performing Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson‘s duet ‘Don’t You Wanna Stay,’ and of course he couldn’t do it alone. As heard in the fan video below, Shelton launched into Aldean’s part and left the audience wondering just how he was going to cover the female vocal for the duet.
