Louisiana school kids have to get up a lot earlier than I had to get up when I was a kid. The reason for those early hours in the morning and extended hours in the afternoon have a lot less to do with school and more to do with transportation too school.

Many school systems in Louisiana suffer from a shortage of qualified bus drivers. In many communities this means drivers are running two routes in the morning and doubling up again in the afternoon. That's the reason some kids leave the house before 6 am and some kids don't get home until almost 5 pm.

Most of our Louisiana schools do a great job of offering a nutritious lunch and almost all now offer some kind of breakfast for students. Have fuel in the tank is important for better learning. But even if your student filled up on school made pizza or those heavenly yeast rolls they make, chances are they will be hungry when they arrive on your doorstep after the final bell has rung for the day.
