For many of us seeing or hearing that students across Acadiana have been able to return to classes in person has been a sign that maybe, just maybe, we are going to eventually get out from under the coronavirus pandemic. However, with the return to class comes the return of issues associated with going back to school.

One of the major topics on the minds of parents and administrators is student safety at school. Not only are there concerns about the coronavirus but the specter of school violence can still rear its ugly head from time to time.

Fortunately, an incident at Rayne High School was quelled before any violence broke out. School officials say a student at the school was found to be in possession of a weapon on campus. That weapon was later confirmed to be a handgun according to KATC television.

Here is what Acadia Parish Superintendent of Schools Scott Richard had to say about the incident. Richard's comments were included in this press release from Acadia Parish Schools.

The Rayne High administration and staff followed all safety protocols in place to handle this type of situation. At the conclusion of the matter, it was determined that this was an isolated incident and school operations resumed. The individual possessing the weapon will be disciplined in accordance with school board policy and state law. We commend the school administration, school staff, student body, and our local law enforcement partners at the Rayne Police Department for handling the matter in such an effective manner. We will continue all efforts to maintain a safe and secure learning environment for all stakeholders.

Classes will resume as normal today following the incident yesterday.
