Automatic Refunds Rolling Out for Amazon Prime Members After $2.5B Settlement
(KMDL-FM) - Heads up Amazon Prime customers in Louisiana, you may have some money coming your way as part of a huge settlement by the company.
If you weren't aware, Amazon reached a historic $2.5 billion settlement a few months ago with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC claimed the online retail giant tricked customers into signing up for its Prime memberships and then made it difficult for them to cancel.

Why Did the FTC Take Action Against Amazon?
“The evidence showed that Amazon used sophisticated subscription traps designed to manipulate consumers into enrolling in Prime and then made it exceedingly hard for consumers to end their subscription,” FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson said when announcing the settlement.

While Amazon was confident they would win the case, the company chose to resolve things quickly instead of going through a lengthy trial and appeals. The company eventually agreed to a settlement while admitting no wrongdoing.
When Will Amazon Issue the Refunds?
Amazon just started making automatic payments to some customers on November 12. Those payments will continue through Christmas Eve (Dec. 24).
How Much Money Can Prime Users Expect?
Under the settlement, eligible Prime customers will get a refund of their Amazon Prime subscription fees, up to a maximum of $51.
Who Is Eligible for an Amazon Prime Refund?
Those eligible for a refund don't need to do anything, because payments are automatic.
“We are putting billions of dollars back into Americans’ pockets, and making sure Amazon never does this again,” Ferguson said.
What Happens If You Don’t Receive a Refund?
Now, if you are an eligible Amazon Prime member and don't get a refund by the end of the year, don't fret. The FTC said that Amazon will begin a claims process next year for eligible Prime customers who didn't get the automatic refund in 2025.
