McGee's Swamp Tours in Henderson is bringing Acadiana an experience like never before. It's called "Atchafalaya Nightmares" and will feature both a boat ride and a walking tour in the Atchafalaya Basin that will surely give everyone in attendance the frissons of a lifetime.

The folks at McGee's have had popular tours surrounding big holidays over the last few years, like Christmas and Valentine's, both of which usually sell out. But this sounds next level.

The tours will run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night in the month of October with nine tour departures per night. The first will be out at 7:00 pm and the last at 10:20 pm.

What exactly will you experience? Well, we reached out McGee's Swamp & Airboat Tours' general manager Robert Donadieu and he gave us a bit of a preview of the tour.

The premise of the event is that someone, Johnny Deaux, is lost in the swamp. You have joined a search party and will venture deep in the wilderness to find them. But this will not be easy. The location is known for unexplained happenings. I think of all the scares though, the best one for people will be actually getting off the boat.

Now, Donadeiu did not want to give out too much of the juicy details so the experience isn't ruined for those who attend.

He did tell us that the whole experience will last approximately 80-90 minutes. It's recommended for those at least 10 years old, due to the nature of the activity (walking about 1/2 mile).

Tickets are actually already on sale. The price is $30 per person and you can reserve your time and purchase here.

And for those concerned about the ongoing pandemic and how that affects the "Atchafalaya Nightmares" tour, Donadieu provided us with the following related to those restrictions:

  • Each departure time is limited to 16 people. This allows space for social distancing during the boat ride to and from the scare trail.
  • Face coverings will be required during the experience, as mandated.
  • The tour will feature a no-contact policy. The actors cannot touch participants and participants cannot touch actors.
  • There will be several hand sanitizing stations at the event headquarters and on the boats.

The best part of "Atchafalaya Nightmares" is that all proceeds from this event support the non-profit BSA Swamp Base, which annually introduces thousands of youth from across the country to the wonders and beauty of the Atchafalaya Basin.
