Drivers in Avoyelles Parish are getting a big surprise in the mail if they're driving their vehicle uninsured. Some drivers have been getting $500 tickets in the mail for what they think is a speeding ticket from a red light camera, but they've actually been caught driving without any insurance.

Avoyelles District Attorney Charles Riddle tells kalb.com that cameras that are set up on trailers that flash driver's speed are actually running license plate numbers to check to see if the vehicle is insured.

Riddle tells kalb.com -

"Several years ago, the law was passed that if you're driving a car uninsured, you have to pay a $500 fine and court costs. What we're doing is offering that person to get insurance, prove to us that they have insurance, and we'll reduce the fine to $200. It's a way for us to encourage people to get insurance."
