Officers with the Basile Louisiana Police Department could be working without pay unless something is done quickly to correct a budget shortfall in the town. The newspaper, Evangeline Today, reported on Friday that the town's officers did receive paychecks this past Friday due to lack of funds.

Only Police Chief Allen Ivory was compensated for his time over the past two week period. Other officers and members of the department were not compensated because of the lack of funds.

According to the story in Evangeline Today, Officer Michael Thomas did agree to work a patrol shift on Friday night but the other officers in the department have indicated they would not be working until the compensation issue can be ironed out.

Law enforcement in the community will be handled in the interim by members of the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Department and troopers with Louisiana State Police. Residents are urged to dial 911 should they need emergency services. Unless more money can be found in the budget the department could be operating without compensated officers until July 1st which is the beginning of the town's next fiscal year.
