Is that squeaky door at home driving you absolutely insane? Never fear! Oh, and there is no need to hire a handyman. Fix it yourself. How you ask? Allow me to elaborate.

Need to fix that squeaky door?

  • It is more than likely your door pin in the hinge. Grab a pair of pliers to pull the pin out. Coat the pin in petroleum jelly (acts as a lubricant) and simply tap the pin back into place. Ta-Da!

Is that electrical outlet in need of changing?

  • First things first, turn off the power to the outlet. After that, take off the plate and remove the old outlet. Check your wires and such for damage (call an electrician if needs changing for safety purposes). If there is no damage, replace the outlet, replace your plate if it is cracked, and you are good to go.

A clogged and leaky pipe is nothing but a pain in the rear end.

  • Before you begin, place a bucket under the pipe to catch any trapped water. Next, loosen the nuts on the pipe and remove the P-trap. Dump the sediment that has been clogging your pipes and the reattach the P-trap and tighten up the nuts. You should now be leak free!

Did you child go crazy in the house with a BB gun? (More common than one would think)

  • Fixing that hole in the wall is extremely simple. Grab some spackling paste and fill in the hole. Hopefully you kept the extra paint for the house. After you smooth out the spackle and let it dry, simply touch up the hole with matching paint.

No that's not a snake. It is the toilet that will not stop running.

  • This may be a little more complicated than the other DIY repairs. However, it is not impossible. The brilliant Bob Vila created a 'how to' guide for you to follow so you don't have to stress about finding a plumber.

Ladies, just a word of advice. These definitely come in handy. My dad was a handyman for many years so I grew up learning how to do little things like these. They have really paid off. If you live by yourself and need to save money, print this out and keep it on the fridge. As helpful as handymen and plumbers are, the bills aren't helpful at all.

My little brother had a knack for throwing things at walls and leaving nice dents and holes. I can't tell you how many I have had to patch up. I have also changed a few wall outlets in my day. It is super easy and keeps your wallet smiling.
