The Better Business Bureau of Acadiana doesn't want you to be scammed out of your hard earned money, and right now, there are several utility scams circulating in our area.

BBB officials say anytime someone on the phone wants you go and get a pre-paid credit card or pre-paid debit card, that should be a warning for you right away.

The scammer may call, text or email you demanding payment for your electrical or gas service or you will be cut off. The BBB says, while energy companies do call their customers, they are not going to ask for payment with pre-paid cards including iTunes cards.

Customers of all the local utility companies have been scammed so the BBB has several ideas to help keep you safe:

  • Never give your personal information to someone you do not know.
  • If you feel pressured to give money right away or they want your personal information, hang up the phone, or ignore the texts and emails.
  • Meters that measure your usage are paid for by the utility company, no by you.
  • Never allow someone into your home to check or fix anything unless you have called about a problem or you have a scheduled appointment with them.
  • When in doubt, hang up, contact the number on your bill to find out information.
