Two weeks ago I gave you the winner of the Kentucky Derby and told you how to place your bets. I was right on the money. I hope you made the proper wager and are now living on a beach somewhere waiting for me to tell you how to increase your portfolio. Today the world of the thoroughbreds will center on Pimlico Race Course. The track is just outside of Baltimore Maryland and it is horse racing's second jewel of the so called triple crown.

The Kentucky Derby featured 19 horses, The Preakness will have only 10 and that will make all the difference in the outcome. The betting public is being led like lambs to the slaughter to put money on California Chrome. He won the Derby going away but it wasn't because he was that much better, it was because the horse that will beat him today wasn't entered.

As you know my Kentucky Derby choice was Ride On Curlin. That was because of Calvin Borel on board as the jockey. The connections with Ride On Curlin have replaced Borel, that was a bad move. Borel has now found himself on the only filly in the field. As much as I love Calvin Borel on a long shot I just don't see Ria Antonia having the motor to stay with the boys. It's not unheard of that a filly could win The Preakness, Rachel Alexandra did in 2009, but that was a different time and a much different horse. Still with odds of 30-1 I will probably give Calvin and his little lady a few bucks just because of superstition.

There are two horses in today's race that were not in Louisville two weeks ago. Those horses are Bayern and Pablo Del Monte. The main reason I like these two over California Chrome is the fact that they did not race at Churchill two weeks ago.

Pablo Del Monte was alternate entry for the Kentucky Derby but a bad post draw and some big picture thinking removed him from that race. He has the chops to win The Preakness and he will certainly be on the front end when they hit the top of the home stretch. I just don't know if he can hang on to the wire.

Bayern is Bob Baffert horse. I think Baffert's kind of a douchebag but he knows race horses and he has pointed Bayern toward The Preakness from the very beginning. His drawback is that he is a burner. He will be on the front for most of the race and the question of how much is left in the tank at the wire will determine Bayern's success.

I guess you're ready for how to play the ticket huh? I think you're going to have to consider California Chrome, Bayern and Pablo Del Monte as your top tier of contenders. The problem with throwing them in a trifecta or exacta box is the mystery of the pace. If the pace of the race is torrid, then none of these three might be standing at the wire. If cooler heads  prevail and the pace is fast but not killer then all three have a great chance to win.

Here is my ticket for The Preakness:

Exacta Box - #3 California Chrome -#5 Bayern -#9 Pablo Del Monte

Win,Place, Show- #9 Pablo Del Monte

Hunch bet  Show-#6 Ria Antonia with Calvin Borel

Remember I am a disc jockey and horse racing is a funny sport, there are no implied guarantees . Bet with caution and if you can't afford to lose it then you can't afford to bet it.
