Cases of Cantaloupes Recalled From Louisiana Store Shelves

Finally, fried food lovers in Louisiana can offer a valid reason for not opting to choose fresh fruit for their morning meal. The reason? Some of that fresh fruit, that is supposed to be so good for you could actually make you sick or even kill you.

I realize that I just made an incredible stretch in my thinking to justify my desire to eat fried boudin balls stuffed with pepper jack cheese versus something that's actually good for my body and not just good for my tastebuds. But seriously, when was the last time you heard of a boudin ball being put on a recall list?

I rest my case.

But you don't need to rest your case of cantaloupes on your kitchen shelf until you have checked to see if any of the individual fruits have stickers with certain identifiers on them. The Kandy cantaloupes with a UPC number code of 4050 and the lot codes 797901, 797900, and 804918 are the subject of a voluntary recall. The reason for the recall is the potential for salmonella. 

The symptoms of salmonella can include a fever. You might also experience a myriad of gastric discomfort. Many people who have been diagnosed with salmonella report feelings of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other pains in the abdominal area. Salmonella can be particularly serious when it infects young children, frail or elderly people, or those with compromised or weakened immune systems.

The cantaloupes in question would have been on your grocer's shelf between September 5th and September 16th. The cantaloupes were distributed to many states including Louisiana and Texas. And if we're being honest, if you have a cantaloupe in your house that you bought almost two weeks ago, it might be a little suspect for consumption anyway.

The United States Food and Drug Administration has not received any reports of illness in connection with the potential salmonella issue. Should you find yourself in possession of some of the contaminated fruit you're advised to just throw it away.
