Louisiana Salmonella Cases Reported as Massive Egg Recall Expanded

LOUISIANA - If you've bought eggs recently in Louisiana, this is one food recall you'll want to pay attention to.

A salmonella outbreak now linked to recalled eggs has sickened nearly 100 people across 17 states, according to federal health officials. While many of the recalled eggs were sold in Louisiana, investigators say the eggs may not explain every illness connected to the outbreak.

Nearly 1.6 Million Eggs Recalled, Including Products Sold In Louisiana

Federal officials recently announced the recall of nearly 1.6 million cartons of white and cage-free brown eggs that were produced at a Texas facility over concerns they may be contaminated with salmonella.

The recalled eggs were distributed to several states, including Louisiana, and were sold through:

1. Kroger stores in Louisiana and Texas
2. Brookshire Grocery stores in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi and New Mexico
3. Various foodservice companies and retail customers in Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma

Salmonella Outbreak Has Sickened 98 People In 17 States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says 98 confirmed illnesses have now been connected to the outbreak across 17 states.

Health officials believe the actual number of people who became sick is likely much higher because many people recover without seeking medical treatment or getting tested.

At least 26 of those who have become ill with salmonella required hospitalization, the CDC’s latest data shows. The ages of all 98 who have become ill range from younger than a year old to 81.

Because the recalled eggs were sold at Louisiana grocery stores, residents are encouraged to inspect any recently purchased eggs.
