LOUISIANA - If you recently picked up a jar of Alfredo sauce for an easy weeknight pasta dinner, you may want to take a closer look at the label before serving it.

A new food recall has been issued involving Alfredo sauce products that could be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause serious illness, especially in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Health officials are urging consumers in Louisiana and 40 other states to check their kitchens and avoid eating any affected products.

Here's what you need to know...

Why This Alfredo Sauce Recall Matters

Food recalls happen regularly in the United States, but recalls involving potential Salmonella contamination are always taken seriously.

The FDA designated the recall a Class I, the agency’s most serious classification.

Salmonella infections can cause symptoms including:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Symptoms typically develop within a few days of exposure and can last up to a week. While many healthy adults recover without medical treatment, severe cases can require hospitalization.
