Police in New Iberia say a three-year-old child has been examined and released to his father following an incident that took place in a New Iberia parking lot yesterday afternoon. According to reports, the young child was left alone in a hot car while the child's mother was shopping at a local office supply store.

Police say the child was discovered in a car in the parking lot of Office Depot in New Iberia about 6 pm by a concerned passerby. The child was taken to a local hospital to be examined while the mother was located inside the store.

At this time no charges have been filed in connection with the incident. The mother was questioned by police and the child was released from the hospital to the custody of the father. Police say the mother could be facing charges of child desertion and cruelty to a juvenile. New Iberia police say their investigation into the incident is ongoing.
