(KMDL-FM) I think the most painful words any one of us can hear in the days before our planned vacation travel are these: "your trip has been cancelled".  I have received those heartbreaking words while in the air on the way to a cruise ship embarkation. I can tell you, it will leave a sour taste in your mouth.

Fortunately, the news that a major cruise line has officially dropped 20 cruise itineraries set for the summer of 2027 should give you more than enough time to reset your plans. And if you've prepaid with the cruise line, then you might be able to secure passage on another vessel or use "this inconvenience" to parlay yourself some extra on-board cruise credits.

What Rights Do Cruise Passengers Have?

While it's true you do have rights as a cruise ship passenger, your rights do not supersede a cruise line's ability to make money. And that is what his cancellation is all about. If you've booked passage aboard Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas with any itinerary sailing in the summer of 2027, you will want to contact your cruise consultant, the cruise line directly, or your travel agent because your ship won't be there when you arrive to get on board.

The Freedom of the Seas has been reassigned to Europe for summer sailings in 2027, but Royal Caribbean didn't leave you high and dry. You might move your planned vacation to the Wonder of the Seas, which will be sailing on a similar itinerary to the one you booked on the "Freedom".

Royal Caribbean Offers Optional Cruises in Place of Cancelled Sailings

There is also an option guests can choose, which would have them sailing on the Adventure of the Seas. There's also an option for a trip on the Jewel of the Seas. So you see, Royal Caribbean didn't leave you out in the cold.

Of course, if there is a difference in fares, you would be refunded that difference, or if you choose not to take one of those options, you may get your money back in full. There is a caveat: you must let Royal Caribbean know your plans by April 1, 2026. That's only a few days away.

If you don't notify Royal Caribbean of your desires, you will be rebooked on the Wonder of the Seas for a 4-night sail departing on September 20, 2027.
