The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible case of animal cruelty after a dog was found dead in a crate floating in the Vermilion River.

Deputies say they received a call yesterday about an animal crate floating in the river near Beaver Park in Lafayette.

Upon arrival, they realized a dead dog was inside the locked crate. The dog is believed to be a one to two-year-old Pitbull.

The dog had no collar or identifying markers, nor was the dog microchipped.

An investigation as to what happened is ongoing. Animal Control was called in to dispose of the animal's remains.

Investigators are hoping someone with information on what happened will come forward. If you recognize the crate in the picture above or have information about a missing dog matching this description, call the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office at 337-232-9211.
