Before I can say anything, I must start by saying a giant 'Thank You.' Today and every day, this thank you goes to policemen everywhere.

This week is National Police Week, honoring all of our law enforcement officers for all of their courage and dedication to keep our communities safe. We often take for granted the work that these men and women do on a daily basis, both night and day.

Though I do not have any law enforcement officers in my family, we have found ourselves in need of these brave men and women. A few months back, I received a call that my home was on fire. Up until now, nothing has scared me more. I was the only one of the six people living in my house that wasn't there. My brother and a neighbor called the fire department to alert them. If you have unfortunately been a part of or seen something like this, you know that it is not just the fire department shows up. All first responders are called out to the scene, including the police.

Although the fire wasn't intentionally set and no one to be arrested, the police officers hung around to simply make sure that my family was safe and comforted them in that devastating time.

This is easy work for law enforcement compared to some of the events they are faced with each and every day including theft, homicide, shoot outs, and vehicular crimes. Being pulled over for exceeding the speed limit seems like a harmless error. Think about it this way. What if a car pulls out in front of you while you are speeding and you don't see them? You can imagine the outcome of that scenario. The purpose of the stop is to prevent accidents like this.

The hard truth is that many officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. This week, we honor the fallen as well. Those who left their loved ones home to put themselves in harms way to keep us safe. So, once again, thank you to all members of law enforcement. We don't say it enough, so here's to you all!
