While the rebuilding process always seems to be a frustrating one after major storms, the heaviest hit parts of Louisiana are slowly getting back on its feet post-Hurricane Laura.

Of course, we all know that in the Bayou State we're all about helping each other getting back on our collective feet. But when the destruction is as bad as this hurricane has unleashed, as taxpayers, we also need our government's help in the recovery process.

FEMA has been a dirty four-letter word to many around our parts since Hurricane Katrina, but there is some good news to report when it comes to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

So far, FEMA has put more than $84 million in the hands of residents of Louisiana, including more than $55 million for housing assistance and almost $28 million for other needs assistance.

To date, FEMA has registered 135,054 Louisianians. 39,453 of those people registered online and more than 72,000 registered using the FEMA Mobile app.

FEMA has 976 staff deployed to help survivors of Hurricane Laura, including 272 supporting remotely. FEMA has also deployed 16 Mobile Communications Office Vehicles (MCOVs) to Louisiana in support of Hurricane Laura response and recovery operations while three Drive-thru DRCs and four Mobile Recovery Intake Centers register survivors and help with assistance questions.

The following parishes have been designated for assistance: Acadia, Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Grant, Jackson, Jefferson Davis, Lincoln, Morehouse, Natchitoches, Ouachita, Rapides, Sabine, Union, Vermilion, Vernon and Winn. More parishes may be designated for assistance in the coming weeks.

Assistance can come in the form of grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

If you have not registered with FEMA, you can do so at disasterassistance.gov, by calling 1-800-621-3362 or using the FEMA Mobile App.
