Forty-five greyhound dogs were rescued by the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office and St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter. The dogs were covered with urine and feces, they were malnourished and dehydrated, and some had sores from being left in kennels too long, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The owner of A Grey Area Greyhound Adoption Inc was arrested this week on a cruelty to animals charge.

The St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter has been receiving many inquiries on the greyhounds they took in. Amy Bouton, spokeswoman for the parish government administration, said they are not available for adoption yet, according to Nola.com. The shelter is dealing with their health issues then they will work with rescue groups to get the dogs ready for adoption.

The owner of It’s A Grey Area Greyhound Adoption Inc. is 55-year-old Leslie Ezkovich-Tierney. She was arrested Monday. On that same day, a post on their Facebook page said that the corporation was closed permanently.

On Wednesday, she said on a Facebook page, that she wouldn’t go down without a fight. She posted a photo of the dogs to show they were in good condition and said, “Im going to comment once. We have been sick and yeah some dogs had diarrhea because they were overfed while we were hospitalized , were some dogs dirty yes, a few were skinny but far from neglected. Was the house a mess ? Yes again dogs were not neglected. They came before us ... i wont go down without a fight.”

Amy Bouton said that Tierney did not have the animal establishment permit that is required for anyone with more than five animals, according to Nola.com
