Gonzales Officer Fled Authorities After Accidental Shooting at Family Gathering
A reserve Gonzales police officer has been fired after he allegedly shot his brother and led authorities on a chase Saturday night.
24-year-old Desmond Lane was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail Sunday morning on one count of negligent injuring. He was released a few hours later.
According to the Gonzales Police Department, Lane accidentally fired his personal weapon at a family gathering just before midnight Saturday and struck his brother.
Police say Lane "panicked" and fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit. He was eventually caught and taken into custody.
Gonzales Police Chief Sherman Jackson said Lane exercised "poor judgment" and has since been terminated from the department.
Lane's brother was reportedly struck in the chest but is expected to survive his injures
