Most of us will see an uptick in the amount of garbage our families produce over the next couple of weeks due to Christmas. So it's important to let you know when you can expect your garbage and recycling service over the holidays.

Republic Services, which is contracted through Lafayette Consolidated Government, will run a day later than usual the weeks of Christmas and New Year's.

The change began Monday, December 25. Garbage and recycling normally collected on Monday will be gathered on Tuesday, and every route will be delayed one day.

The same thing will happen for the first week of the new year. Everything will go back to normal January 8.

Excess trash that doesn't fit your 96-gallon garbage bin will be collected the same day as your garbage bin is emptied. All excess garbage must be in bags and each bag should weigh less than 35 pounds.

Residents are asked to put those excess garbage bags at least three feet from their garbage cart and nothing should be placed on top of the cart.

Christmas trees will be picked up too. Those will be collected the same day as your garbage. Just make sure all ornaments and lights along with any wooden stands nailed to the base of the tree are removed.
