Again this week residents in Lafayette and the parish will have an adjusted trash collection schedule.

There will be no residential garbage or recycling service on New Year's Day for customers served by Republic Services and the Recycling Foundation in Lafayette Parish.

Customers who regularly receive service on Thursday will receive collection on Friday and Friday customers on Saturday.

If you have excessive garbage resulting from holiday celebrations, customers will receive excessive garbage collection on their first service day following New Year's Day.

Once the large automated garbage cart is full, residents may bag any excess garbage and place the bagged garbage on the ground four feet away from the cart. Large boxes will also be collected, but should be empty except for the original packing material.

If you need to get rid of an artificial Christmas tree, you can do so with your excessive garbage until January 7. After that, artificial trees will be collected during residents' monthly "bulky waste" collection.

There is no specific collection schedule for natural Christmas trees. Once residents take down their Christmas trees, the trees should be totally cleaned of all lights and ornaments, as well as any stand which may be nailed onto the base of the tree.

Natural trees will be collected on residents' regular yard waste day, which is the same day as residents' scheduled garbage collection day. Natural trees will be processed into mulch.

If residents have any questions regarding any of the above, they can contact the Environmental Quality Division at (337) 291-8529.
