As I have grown older I have found less and less I could depend on in life. One of the sure bets that I have found over the years is this, On New Year's Day I will eat Black Eyed Peas, Rice and Cabbage and there will be a football game to watch on television. In Mississippi we called it Hoppin' John, you might call it that too. Why do we eat it on New Year's Day?

Eat poor that day, eat rich the rest of the year. Rice for riches and peas for peace.

- Southern saying on eating a dish of Hoppin' John on New Year's Day.

I hope you will join my family in a bowl of riches and peace for the new year. If you're unsure how to make Hoppin' John, here is a recipe and a history lesson, just give a click.
