The Huey P. Long Bridge in Jefferson Parish was closed yesterday for three hours as a man threatened to jump off it.

Authorities were forced to shut down the bridge from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm to help the man to safety.

The bridge closure happened at the height of rush hour on the MLK holiday and traffic stretched on US 90 East to River Road but congestion was minimum heading westbound.

The man's identity has not been revealed nor the reason for him threatening to jump off the bridge.

The Huey P. Long Bridge spans the Mississippi River between Bridge City and Elmwood. It is one of the main thoroughfares connecting the river between the east and west banks of the New Orleans area.
