West Baton Rouge Parish could soon be the leader when it comes to going green. Port Allen has been chosen to house the largest solar power plant in the state. And it will happen as long as a state government agency gives it the thumbs up.

Arizona-based company Eagle Solar would be developing the project.

The proposed 500-acre plant would be located on a current sugar cane field in Port Allen.

Building the plant would create 350 temporary jobs. However, once built, only four permanent jobs would be needed.

Entergy Louisiana announced on Thursday that they would be taking advantage of the new plant, which would change the way residents in the parish get their electricity.

And it could also mean a cheaper electricity bill. Entergy says they would save customers almost $30 million over 20 years.

The Louisiana Public Service Commission has to approve the project before construction can begin. A spokesperson says that could take anywhere from one to six months to happen.
