CARENCRO, La. (KPEL-FM) - State and local leaders gathered Friday, March 27, in Carencro to break ground on a major $43 million preservation project along Interstate 49.

$43 Million I-49 Project Breaks Ground

The ceremony took place at the Carencro Sports Complex and marks the start of improvements along an 8.9-mile stretch of I-49 from Interstate 10 to the St. Landry Parish line — a heavily traveled corridor that carries more than 85,000 vehicles each day.

Work to Begin in April 2026

Construction is scheduled to begin in early April 2026, with completion expected by the summer of 2027. The work will include asphalt milling, pavement repairs, roadway reinforcement, and a new asphalt overlay designed to extend the life of the highway and improve driving conditions for motorists.

Officials say the project is aimed at improving safety and supporting continued economic growth across the Acadiana region.

Local Leaders Highlight Importance

Eric Dauphine with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development says the project focuses on preserving one of the state’s busiest travel routes while strengthening infrastructure for the future.

State Senator Gerald Boudreaux says the investment will help support local communities, businesses, and the regional workforce by maintaining a reliable transportation corridor.

Local leaders also praised the project, including Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Boulet, St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard, and Carencro Mayor Charlotte Clavier, who each highlighted the importance of maintaining safe and efficient roadways for residents and visitors.

What Drivers Can Expect

Much of the construction work is expected to take place overnight to limit disruptions to daily traffic. Drivers are urged to stay alert, follow posted signs, and use caution when traveling through work zones.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development also recognized the project team, including engineering and construction partners involved in the effort.
