Last weekend, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development closed down I-49 northbound in Lafayette to work on repairing the damages made to the overpass.

As that work continues, DOTD will be doing the same again this weekend.

The following closures will take place this weekend:

I-49 Northbound (Evangeline Thruway)

Starting Friday, February 14, at 9:00 am through Saturday, February 15, at 5:00 am, Interstate 49 northbound at its intersection with I-10 will be closed to all traffic (weather permitting).

Emergency vehicles will not have access to this section of I-49 northbound.

I-10 Eastbound

Beginning Friday, February, 14, at 9:00 pm until Sunday, February 16, at 5:00 am, Interstate 10 eastbound, between the University Avenue Interchange and through the I-49 Interchange, will be reduced to one lane (weather permitting).

Emergency vehicles will have access to the inside lane of the area.

Ramp Closures

During this time, the following closures will also remain in place:

  • I-10 eastbound overpass auxiliary lane (deceleration/acceleration lane)
  • I-49 northbound exit ramp from I-10 (Exit 103B)
  • Exit 1A to access I-10 eastbound

The Reason for the I-49 and Ramp Closures

These closures are necessary for crews to pour the concrete bridge deck for the I-10 eastbound overpass. (You may recall it was damaged when a truck carrying a large piece of equipment hit it late last year.)

Detour Routes

Motorists traveling on I-49 northbound: Take Exit 1A (Baton Rouge), continue eastbound on I-10 to Exit 104 (Louisiana Ave), turn left on Louisiana Avenue, then take I-10 westbound to Exit 103B (I-49/US 167 - Opelousas).

When will the project be completed?

Louisiana DOTD still estimates the project to be completed in March 2025, weather permitting.

Not-So-Nice Nicknames for 10 Louisiana Towns

Nicknames are a wonderful thing if you happen to be given the right one. That's the problem with nicknames, you don't get to pick your own. So, depending on the kind of people you hang out with your pseudonym is either a flattering referral to a trait you own. Or it's a sarcastic reminder of your shortcomings. The same rules apply when it comes to the nicknames we use for the communities we love. Although, from some of these nicknames, I'm not sure I can feel the love tonight, or any night for that matter.
