Grass Median on Lafayette Road Makes Navigating Difficult
(Lafayette, Louisiana) - I recently went to a local business in Lafayette and noticed that a grass median has been built in what was once a turning lane.
The business I visited is on the 600 block of Surrey Street in Lafayette, and as I apporached the business, I couldn't help but notice what now occupies what used to be a turning lane.
A median with tall grass is now in front of several businesses, which makes it not only difficult to arrive at these businesses, but also to leave them as welll.
The median is only a few feet wide, but it prevents drivers from turning left into these businesses, and when you exit their parking lots, your vehicle comes very close to going into the median.
I asked a few workers in the office that I was in what they thought about this, and both immediately said, 'I hate it." In fact, one of the workers told me to look at the ruts and tire tracks in the median when I left.
She explained that large delivery trucks can't properly navigate the narrow lanes and are leaving tracks as they now enter the median. So, as I exited the office, I looked into this grass median, and sure enough, you can see where vehicles have entered it.
You can see there's been a lot of work on Surrey, and according to one of the office workers, the city has spent millions on this project. The woman who told me about the project said she spoke with a construction worker on the median, and he told her it will not last because large vehicles will break the cement when trying to drive past it.

I don't know what the city plans for this median, but the tall grass isn't attractive, and nearby businesses don't seem to favor this new obstacle in the road.
Here are a few of the photos I took from Surrey St.
