Louisiana and Texas Residents Set to See Influx in Hummingbirds
(KTDY) - If you love seeing hummingbirds in your yard, you'll love this bit of news we have to share here.
For some reason, many reported on social media this Spring that they did not see the number of hummingbirds in their yard like in previous years, but that is about to change.
Yes, hummingbirds are back on the move, and they are heading south as fall approaches.
So, if you have feeders out or stored away, make sure that the feeders are clean and filled with the bright red substance because these beautiful birds will soon be back.
September is a migration month for small birds, and soon hummingbirds will be heading south to cross the Gulf, stopping along the way to "fuel up" for their journey towards the Yucatan.
What to Put in Hummingbird Feeders
For many, you can purchase a hummingbird substance pre-mixed, but if you want to make your own substance, it's pretty simple. All you need to do is create a simple sugar-water mixture with a 1:4 ratio of white granulated sugar to water.
Dissolve the sugar in the water, and then cool the mixture before filling the feeder. You should never add red dye, honey, or artificial sweeteners, as these are harmful to hummingbirds.
Red color does attract hummingbirds; therefore, you should purchase a red feeder so that the solution in it appears to be red.
Oh, one more thing: make sure your feeder is high enough off the ground so that animals like cats can't prey on the birds. The small birds often attract animals like cats as they hover near feeders.
