Late Monday night, a grim discovery was made in the waters of the Mississippi River as a dredging company ran across a lifeless body.

Law enforcement authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the incident and officials from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office reported that there were no immediate indicators of foul play associated with the recovered body. The spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office, in a statement, reassured the public that every effort would be made to look into the circumstances surrounding the tragic find.

According to The Advocate, the initial alert about the body came from the Coast Guard, who contacted the Sheriff's Office shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Monday. The body had been unearthed during routine dredging operations, a process designed to maintain the navigability of the river.

Casey Rayborn Hicks, the spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office, disclosed that the Sheriff's Office Maritime Division was promptly dispatched to the scene. The team successfully recovered the body and subsequently handed it over to the Coroner's Office for further examination.

Efforts to establish the identity of the deceased individual have been set in motion. The Baton Rouge Police Department, in coordination with the LSU Faces Lab, has taken on the task of identifying the person.

Lt. McKneely says that an investigation into this tragic incident remains ongoing and assured the public that more information will be shared as it becomes available.

This is a developing story.
