The LA Wallet app is a digital driver's license app that Louisiana residents have quickly taken to over the past several years. Having an electronic license on you at all times via your smartphone has proven to be extremely convenient especially if you forget your wallet to purse at home.

Now the question is "Is the convenience of the app worth the convenience fee?" LA Wallet has added a convenience fee however the app still remains a free app. Louisiana users have taken to social media to express confusion over the addition of the fee and to warn others of the change.

We spoke with Amanda Hixon who works for the developers of the LA Wallet app to clarify confusion around the fees.

What You Need to Know About Louisiana's Legal Digital Driver's License

  • 100% Legal for Louisiana drivers since 2016 when Act 625 was passed
  • All Louisiana Police will accept your license on the LA Wallet App
  • Available for both Apple and Android Users
  • VerifyYou Pro allows businesses to scan IDs during deliveries of age-restricted goods

LA Wallet Convenience Fee

The app has been free since 2020 since Gov. Edwards waived the fee in response to COVID-19 according to Amanda Hixon who works for Envoc, the creators of LA Wallet.

LA Wallet now offers users the option to renew their physical license inside the app without the trouble of physically going to the DMV.

The standard price for renewing a license in the app is $32.50 with the addition of a $23.00 'convenience fee'.

This Option for renewing, is just that, an option. If a resident wants to get the digital version of their ID the next day, renew from the comfort of their couch, and support a free app, they are able to renew in the app and support LA Wallet

New VerifyYou Scan Feature

This feature allows anyone with the LA Wallet app to scan the back of a physical license to verify its legitimacy. Once the ID is scanned the results will include a photo of the citizen, if the ID is valid, and it will also detail if that person is under or over the age of 18 or 21.
