With the passing of rock legend Ozzy Osbourne, many fans worldwide are reflecting on his iconic legacy. However, here in South Louisiana, one particular memory stands out.

Back in May 2017, Ozzy surprised locals in New Iberia when he walked through the doors of Daspit Grocery, a family-owned neighborhood store, as cameras rolled for his reality series Ozzy & Jack's World Detour.

The rock icon wasn’t just visiting for the show; he was spending time with his son, Jack, and then-daughter-in-law, Lisa Stelly, a Jeanerette native and founder of Fancy Sprinkles.

"We Were All in Shock He Was There"

Victoria Bourque was working at the store that day and remembers the surreal moment clearly.
“They told us Ozzy was coming to film something, and we all thought he was headed to Avery Island,” she recalled. “Next thing you know, he walks into Daspit with Jack and a camera crew. Our management told us to act ‘normal.’”

According to Bourque, Ozzy didn’t speak much during the visit, but Jack was friendly and explained they were filming for the show. “We were all just in shock that he was actually there,” she said. “The parking lot was full of people waiting to catch a glimpse—rain and all.”

When asked if she remembered what they bought, Bourque laughed: “I think it was Sprite… and maybe some of our fresh sausage. It’s been a while!”

Rock Royalty in Cajun Country

At the time, Ozzy’s appearance in South Louisiana made waves locally. A 2017 report from Hot 107.9 documented multiple Osbourne sightings around Acadiana, including a stop at Antler’s in Lafayette and visits to other spots connected to Lisa Stelly’s roots.

Now, with news of Ozzy’s death at 76, this memory has resurfaced on social media, with locals sharing photos and stories from his time in the area.

So as you can see, even global icons find themselves in unexpected places, from selling out stadiums to strolling through small-town grocery aisles.

Ozzy Osbourne may be gone, but for many in Acadiana, that rainy day in New Iberia will always be a little piece of rock and roll history.
