Many large retailers have private-label brands. Often, these brands are made by the same companies that create and distribute the higher-priced national brands. In some cases, as the Kirkland's Brand offered at Costco stores, the store brand is more preferred than the national brands.
What Is the Biggest Complaint Consumers Have About Store Brand Products?
The most often heard complaint about store brands or private labels is that the quality is not the same as the nationally advertised brands. In most cases, that is simply a matter of taste because all of the products are manufactured to at least minimum standards and must exceed all safety standards before they can be offered to you.
The safety standards are the issue that Walmart is reacting to today. The Food and Drug Administration issued a recall notice on certain Great Value brand cottage cheese products on Wednesday.
The FDA warning suggests that the products may not have met or will not meet state regulatory pasteurization standards. Pasteurization is a heat-treatment process that kills pathogens and reduces spoilage microorganisms in food and beverages, most commonly milk, to enhance safety and extend shelf life.
