Tragic Incident: Nearly 30 Pigs Struck by Cars on I-10 Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge
A shocking incident unfolded on the Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge Tuesday night when nearly 30 pigs fell from a trailer and were struck by passing cars. The event has left motorists and local residents both disturbed and concerned.
According to WBRZ, a trailer carrying pigs lost its load when the gate unexpectedly came loose. The pigs fell onto the westbound lanes in the middle of the bridge and were run over by oncoming traffic. Graphic footage capturing the incident was later released, heavily edited to spare viewers from the gruesome scenes.
This incident adds to recent road mishaps involving animals and food items in Louisiana. Earlier this week, deer were reported causing hazards on I-49 in Carencro, and a load of raw alligator meat spilled onto Evangeline Thruway earlier this month.
Blaine Rabalais, a Brusly resident who was present during the unfortunate event, recounted, “Crossing the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge is something I do on a regular basis. Never did I expect to have to dodge pig carcasses. It was something so unexpected, yet I will never forget the images instilled in my mind forever. I remember this same bridge having loose cows many years ago, but pigs this time is just wild.”
Heavy machinery was deployed overnight to clear the bridge of pig carcasses before Wednesday’s morning rush. As of this report, it remains unclear whether the truck responsible for the accident has been located.
As investigations continue, commuters are advised to exercise extreme caution when crossing the Mississippi River Bridge, at least until further notice.
