If you lock your car at night in Louisiana, it can't be broken into or stolen without someone breaking a window or otherwise forcefully breaking into it. Well, that's not the case anymore. In the picture above, the thief has a box he is using the read a radio frequency to get into the car.

Smarter thieves are continuing to use technology to their advantage in Louisiana.

Most people, when they walk into their homes, put their keys in a bowl or on a hook near their door. Usually, your car is parked in close proximity to that door. Why does any of this matter?

Thieves are now going up to homes, using a transmitting, getting a signal from your key fob right inside your door, and they are able to open your car doors. And then, like the picture below they are going to be able to drive away in your car:

It's just the latest way that thieves are using technology to rob you of the things you have worked so hard for.

What Is an RFID Signal?

How many times have you heard someone talk about or mention RFID? You've probably heard this mention constantly, but did you think about what this is? Maybe not.

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. Your little key fob, or anything else with an RFID chip in it, admits a radio wave. That's how when you walk up to your car you can click a button and open the door. It's also why you can get in your car, put your key in your pocket, and still be able to start your car.

The Department of Homeland Security defines it this way:

There is a device that reads information contained in a wireless device or "tag" from a distance without making any physical contact or requiring a line of sight.

So, we have tons of these things in various items that make our lives wireless.

Here's what thieves do:

What Can You Do to Protect Your Property in Your Car and Your Car?

The easiest way to combat this is to make sure you put your key fob far away from your vehicle. So instead of that hook right inside your door or that bowl everyone throws their keys into, store your keys in a bowl or hook in your bedroom. Unless, of course, your bedroom is right by your driveway.

To be sure you are protected you can purchase something to block that signal then thieves walking up to your car with a transmitter will be thwarted.
