At last night's meeting of the  Jeff Davis School’s Building and Grounds Committee, there was only one item on the agenda. That agenda item was to decide which of three suggested names to recommend to the full school board for a new elementary school in Jennings.

The three choices the committee had to consider were James Ward Elementary School, Jennings Elementary School, and Jennings Ward Elementary School. Each of those choices had received the support of at least 50 citizens in order to make the shortlist.

The committee heard from supporters of all three names that were being considered. In the end, the committee chose to recommend the name Jennings Elementary to the full school board for consideration.

The board is scheduled to vote on the recommendation at the November meeting of the full Jeff Davis Parish School Board. Meanwhile, the school itself, won't be ready for students until the year 2022 at the earliest. Construction on the new school isn't even set to begin until April of next  year.

The new school is being built with money coming from an almost $30-billion bond issue and sales tax initiative that was approved by voters. The campus will be located across 20-acres off of LA 26 South.
