It's Spring Break in Acadiana and that means a lot of families and students will be climbing in their cars and heading for some rest and relaxation at the beach. That also means getting a fill up at your favorite local gas station before you hit the road. How much is that fill up going to cost you?

It looks like most of us will be paying $3.67 to $3.69 for a gallon of regular gas in the area. If you want premium or shop near the interstate you could be paying a little bit more than that. What does the price per gallon mean to you in terms of real money? Let's say your car gets 25 miles to the gallon and you drive from Lafayette to Crowley and back everyday. That is roughly a round trip of 40 miles. This means you are using 1.6 gallons of gas, your mileage of course may vary.  You are paying $5.87 for your daily round trip. If you make that round trip every day, five days a week your gas cost is $29.36.

We mentioned Spring Break and maybe a visit to the beach, how much is that going to cost you in gasoline? Suppose you were going to spend some time in Destin Florida over the break that distance is about 362 miles. If you make it a round trip because you do have to come back to work and school your total distance is 724 miles. You can find the driving distances to other destinations too. If you're overloaded car gets 25 miles to the gallon you are going to use 28.96 gallons of gas. If you go with the cost of $3.67 your trip will cost $106.28.

Unfortunately the prices of gas along the route are going to be different than what we pay in Lafayette. In Destin gas prices are about .12 cents more per gallon. What can you do to get better gas mileage? There are some great tips that have nothing to do with gas you can try. Just remember slow and steady will get you there and get you there more cheaply so keep your speed under control and avoid those jack rabbit starts and stops.

Drive safely, have fun and send us some pictures from your vacation and be sure to tune  in 97.3 The Dawg with RadioPup while you are on the beach. Just because you're away from home doesn't mean you have to miss your hometown station!
