Lafayette Has a Hidden Cemetery Most People Don’t Know Exists

One of the more unusual examples can be found tucked away in the Broadmoor area, where a small cemetery has quietly remained for decades.

It's called Whittington Cemetery, and its history goes back more than a century.

Where Is Lafayette's Hidden Cemetery?

Whittington Cemetery is located off Broadmoor Boulevard near the Vermilion River, with an official address listed as 101 Mosswood Circle in Lafayette.

And there's a good reason many people have never heard of it.

The cemetery sits on private property, making it mostly out of sight for people driving through the Broadmoor neighborhood.

That's part of what has earned it the nickname Lafayette's "hidden cemetery."

For most people, it's just not something you would stumble across during a normal drive around town.

The Lafayette Cemetery Dates Back To 1899

According to findagrave.com, the earliest person buried at Whittington Cemetery is John S. Whittington, whose marked grave dates back to 1899.

That means the cemetery predates much of the modern development that now surrounds it. Records also show that 12 people are buried at the cemetery, with the most recent burial listed as taking place in 2008.

What Makes Whittington Cemetery So Interesting?

The cemetery's history goes beyond the handful of visible graves.

A past dispute involving the property brought attention to the grave sites and raised questions about whether there could be unmarked graves on the land.

According to information reported in 2015 by The Advertiser, a letter from James Whittington Sr. stated that the oldest marked grave belonged to his great-grandfather, who died in 1899.

The letter also mentioned family stories about Civil War soldiers and people who had worked on the Whittington farm being buried on the property.
