The Lafayette Little Leaguers (13-14 year olds) won the State Tournament over the host Shreveport team by doing what they had been doing the whole tournament - mercy ruling their opponent.

The team from the Hub City now moves on to the Regional Tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Lafayette jumped out 2-0 on Shreveport on two hits in the top of the 1st inning. The boys then tacked on single runs each in the 2nd and 3rd innings (one of them being on a sacrifice fly) before exploding for six runs in the 4th inning to run the score to 10-0, which ended up being the final score in five innings.

Those who have been following this Lafayette Little League team, though, are probably not surprised at this team's easy run through the State Tournament. This is the same group that made it to the Little League World Series (11-12 year olds) in Williamsport in 2011.

This team's next game will be Friday, August 2, in the Regional Tournament, a game that will air on either Sportsradio ESPN 1420 AM or Talkradio 960 AM, both Townsquare Media stations.

Congratulations also goes out to the Lafayette Little League Challenger Team (special needs division) for being selected to represent Challenger Baseball in the Little League Southwest Regionals in Waco, Texas, on July 27. These boys and girls face physical and mental challenges everyday, and this allows them to live out their dreams on the field and be recognized for the superstars that they are.

The Lafayette Community's generosity helped provide them the opportunity to play at the Little League World Series in 2011. If you would like to donate money to the Challenger Team for their trip to Waco, and to help make their experience at the ball park that much better, contact Bryan Molaison at 337-258-5078 or write checks payable to Lafayette Little League and mail to: Bryan Molaison, 103 S. Hantsport Sq. Lafayette, LA 70508.
