I am about to spill the beans on a secret that only media types are aware of. It's a service called Nixle. It's a notification system that many law enforcement agencies use to share information about road closures, traffic incidents, important alerts and more.

It's absolutely free and it's what we use here at 97.3 The Dawg to get information from State Police, local sheriff's offices and now the Lafayette Police Department.

If you'd like to be among the first to know of traffic alerts, emergencies, road closures and the like and be able to have that information sent directly to your telephone then all you have to do is sign up for Nixle.

During the sign up process you can ask to be included in the alert system from State Police and many other local law enforcement agencies. This service is especially valuable if you are on the road quite a bit. I will caution you, these alerts can come at all hours of the night and day. If you don't like hearing your phone beep at 1:30 in the morning you might want to think twice about signing up.
